37.2222 °CWhen to convert °F to °C
Use Fahrenheit to Celsius for weather, ovens, food storage and temperature comparisons.
- ▸Read a US weather forecast in the Celsius scale.
- ▸Match a Fahrenheit oven instruction to a Celsius control.
Common mistakes
- ✕Temperature readings require subtracting 32 before multiplying by 5/9; temperature differences do not use the 32-degree offset.
- ✕Applying the wrong direction of the °F/°C formula (many people multiply by 5/9 instead of 9/5).
- ✕Forgetting the +32 offset for Fahrenheit or the +273.15 offset for Kelvin.
- ✕Using degrees Kelvin — Kelvin has no degree symbol (write "300 K", not "300 °K").
- ✕A temperature and a temperature difference convert differently. To convert a reading, use °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. To convert a difference or an interval, drop the offset: a rise of 10 °C is a rise of 18 °F, not 50 °F. This is the single most common temperature conversion error.
Regional usage & source
Celsius is the global standard. Fahrenheit is used in the US. Kelvin is standard in science and engineering.
Reference: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. Kelvin = °C + 273.15. The Kelvin was redefined in 2019 in terms of the Boltzmann constant (BIPM).

Fahrenheit to Celsius — FAQs
What is 60 °F in °C?
60 °F = 15.5556 °C.
What is 450 °F in °C?
450 °F = 232.2222 °C.
What is 78 °F in °C?
78 °F = 25.5556 °C.
What is 20 °F in °C?
20 °F = -6.6667 °C.
Is the °F to °C result exact or rounded?
Temperature readings use an offset as well as a scale factor: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. This is not multiplication by a fixed per-degree value. Results are calculated before display rounding; a temperature difference uses only the scale factor, not the offset.
How do I convert °C back to °F?
The reverse formula is °F = °C × 9/5 + 32. For example, -17.2222 °C converts back to approximately 1 °F; a rounded intermediate result can introduce a small rounding difference.
